The Hour of Code
To celebrate Computer Science Education Week, all K-5 students will be learning the basics of code writing by participating in the Hour of Code. The goal of this program is to get students involved and excited about writing programs. The Hour of Code is taking place December 9-15 at AIS during all technology classes. Students are encouraged to continue their learning at home and go beyond one hour. The program we will begin with is based on the game "Angry Birds." After the basics are learned on this program, students can move on to more complex code writing. Below is a link to code.org, there you will find videos from some of today's most successful computer programmers, as well as many coding games and challenges.

- How to create basic programs using graphical coding languages
- Key terminology, such as "loop" and "function"
- Problem solving and critical thinking skills needed to create working programs and debug problems
- How the Web and apps are made out of building blocks that they can rearrange to create new things through an iterative process
- Tools to practice programming at home or at school
- That coding is FUN!
